Update on Luna by Museum's Soundwatch Coordinator

Kari Koski, our Soundwatch Boater Education Coordinator, has been in British Columbia helping to patrol the area to protect Luna, the orphaned orca. She conveyed the following information via a friend on September 19:

The most updated news on Luna is both good and about the same. Luna hasn't been seen in the Gold River area since the 9th. He has been spending most of his time near the town of Zeballos, which is a small community about 50 miles north of the Gold River area. Yesterday (Sept. 18) Kari (Koski) and the other Luna Stewardship volunteers checked in on him and report that he is doing fine. Both of the wounds are healing nicely, with the most recent barely visible at this point. None of the people think it is odd or new that Luna has wandered north. Most likely he has found a new community of people who shriek and otherwise provide stimulus to his presence. One of the volunteers has worked with captive whales in the past and reports that Luna looks in great health and spirits, all things considered.
