Rare Whale Carcass Washes Ashore in Flagler

by Laura Sonis

Scientists are hoping to study the carcass of a whale, which washed up behind an oceanfront gated community and was spotted this morning.

The 25-foot-long animal, either a fin or sei whale, rolled in the surf outside The Club at Hammock Beach on this afternoon. Both fin and sei whales are endangered.

"This is the biggest thing to happen to Flagler for a while," said biologist Tom Pitchford, who works for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission out of St. Augustine.

Fin and sei whales rarely beach in Florida, he said, and the fin whale less so than the sei.
