Two-Day Dolphin Death Count Reaches 21

by Christine Rappleye

One more dead bottlenose dolphin washed up on a Southeast Texas beach Tuesday, bringing the two-day total to 21, said Kim Amendola, a communication specialist with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries division.

Twelve were found Monday morning and eight more washed up Monday afternoon. All were badly decomposed and included newborns, yearlings and older adults, according to Amendola.

The 21 are about a third of the 60 dead dolphins that have washed up along the entire Texas coast since January, said Heidi Watts, Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network operations coordinator. Those have included all ages and varying levels of decomposition
